Clos de Tart Grand Cru 2017

Clos de Tart is a renowned wine estate located on a single Grand Cru monopoly vineyard in the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis and produces two wines: Clos de Tart and La Forge de Tart. Clos de Tart has always been a monopoly vineyard, previously owned by the Mommessin family, who acquired the estate in 1932. The family sold their vineyard (and the name) to Jean-Claude Boisset of the great Burgundian winegrowing family.

An example of what a unique great Burgundy should be, none out there is like Clos de Tart in terms of flavour profile. Tasting this wine reminds me of the film ‘Perfume’ where the expert is constantly searching for the perfect fragrance. Highly concentrated, very expressive but also extremely lively. Rich in finesse and unique with notes of provence herbs, medicine, iodine among others but also a light kiss of wood, juicy ripe black cherry but also blackberry. The finish is breathtaking and endless, the wine transforms after a few minutes and increases in complexity once again, showing that it demands a lot of air and patience. Extremely elegant and silky on the palate. Definitely a burgundy that you should try. Based on my experience with younger vintages, I would warn against drinking the wines young, as they all show a reduction and should be bottle-aged for at least 5 years. The sky's the limit and there are plenty of more mature vintages out there on the secondary market that are quite affordable.
