Masi Agricola is a wine producer in Veneto, northern Italy and is famous for its Valpolicella wines - and in particular its Amarone wines - although it uses a range of indigenous and international grape varieties. The portfolio is broad and ranges from single-vineyard Amarone to inexpensive varietal wines labelled Verona IGT and delle Venezie. The Masi cellars are specially designed for the Appassimento technique, in which the grapes are dried on bamboo racks.
Of course I did not miss the opportunity to taste all the available wines that were presented, there were some very nice Amarone della Valpolicella but I would like to give my attention to this unique wine that we were allowed to taste from a magnum, a 1997 vintage.
What can I say, well, I was amazed at how these wines are able to age, it is a 1997, but by no means mature, I think it is at the beginning of its long maturity. The non plus ultra of the Domaine , is only bottled in exceptional years and only as a magnum. One of the best Amarone you can get, it has so much power and concentration that the 1997 vintage still seems young. The aromas of black dried fruit, smoke, iodine and spices, to name a few, are very pronounced. Warm and soft on the palate with an incredible finish, it could hardly be better and if I had to name a perfect Amarone on the market, I would certainly consider it. It is very difficult to pinpoint a drinking window, but having tasted it recently, I would say 2025-2080.
