Tenuta Argentiera is an Italian wine producer in Bolgheri on the southern coast of Tuscany, whose name is derived from the silver mines (‘argento’) that were once scattered across the landscape here. The flagship Argentiera Bolgheri Superiore is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. It matures for 18 months in French oak barriques before being bottled for 12 months.
In this case, I had the pleasure of tasting the entire range of wines produced by the Tenuta, but I would like to focus on one particular wine that caught my attention : the Ventaglio 2016 !
100% cabernet franc with a very unique character, showing lots of black berries, cherry, oak notes, smoke and dark chocolate. A very superb grape variety which, when all the conditions are right, produces highly elegant wines that have nothing to hide from any Bordeaux first growths. Lots of freshness, body and fine, silky tannins. An excellent vintage that has already matured well and can be enjoyed.
Of course, all Supertuscans are very different, but I find that this wine is very similar to a first-class Bordeaux and strangely enough, shows no obvious balsamic notes and is more of a classic Bordeaux from the right bank. Bordeaux lovers should definitely keep an eye out for it as this wine is already wonderfully drinkable in its younger years, but I would still give a very generous drinking window of 2025-2050.
