Tenuta San Guido, Sassicaia 2020

Tenuta San Guido is better known by the name of its most famous wine - Sassicaia. The winery is based in Tuscany and has its own DOC designation (Bolgheri Sassicaia) for its signature label. Sassicaia, one of the original super-Tuscan wines, is made from Cabernet Sauvignon with a small proportion of Cabernet Franc. Sassicaia (‘stony field’ in English) was created in the 1940s by the Marchese Mario Incisa della Rocchetta (a cousin of the Antinoris) as an experiment wine and produces two other wines from declassified Sassicaia fruit called Guidalberto and Le Difese.

There is a lot of hype around this wine, I have tasted it many times over the last few years and I see a change in winemaking, Sassicaia is no longer a wine that needs at least a decade of bottle ageing to be enjoyed in any way, it has a lot to offer even in its youth, in this case lots of delicious wild cherry, plum, blackberry, smoke, earthy notes and even some dried herbs, quite elegant with fresh acidity and very fine tannins that are perfectly integrated and I must admit I like this style more than older vintages.

It is often compared to Ornellaia the eternal rival, which in my opinion is not correct, of course it is also a Supertuscan but the wines are completely different but they have one thing in common: they benefit from bottle maturity and both go excellently with beef and game dishes.

I would suggest waiting until at least 2030 for it to mature, although it is also fine now, there are no upper limits, I am sure that it will be a pleasure even after 40 years of bottle ageing. As far as buying is concerned, I would advise buying young wines to get to know the style, as they are not much different in price from much more mature vintages.
