Ornellaia is one of the premier producers in the Bolgheri appellation, founded in 1981 by Marchese Lodovico Antinori. This Bordeaux-style blend is a pioneer among the Super Tuscans, crafted primarily from Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, with smaller amounts of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The vineyard is situated in the coastal region of Tuscany, near the renowned Sassicaia.
I’ve been following Ornellaia for years, even when it was a fraction of the price it commands today. The trend toward wines that are more accessible and enjoyable in their youth is something I wholeheartedly embrace. This particular vintage is a true testament to that trend, offering remarkable complexity with notes of wild cherry, cranberries, and ripe plum, along with subtle hints of smoke, earth, and a light balsamic touch. On the palate, it’s powerful and direct, much like the bold Tuscan character, yet beautifully balanced with a refreshing acidity. It’s not weighed down by oak, like some other wines in the region. While it’s already a true pleasure to drink and provides a fantastic experience, it will undoubtedly improve over the next decade. However, don’t hesitate to open it young with some aeration to enjoy its early charm.
A wine with such power and structure pairs wonderfully with rich beef and game dishes. While prices continue to rise, there are still bottles from the '90s that remain in excellent drinking condition and are still relatively affordable. If you’re not in a rush, I’d suggest a drinking window of 2030-2050.
