Château Pontet-Canet is a critically honoured Château in Pauillac, classified as a fifth growth in the Bordeaux Classification of 1855. However, critics agree that the quality exceeds that of some third and even second growths. In top years such as 2018, 2015 and 2009, it is even at the level of a first growth.
Indeed 2015 convinces already after the first smell , there is so much going on in the glass that you first have to sit down and think. Redcurrant, sour cherry, cedar, graphite, smoke, eucalyptus to name a few nuances that are immediately available and co-operate so beautifully with each other that you have the feeling the wine is perfect.
On the palate the game continues and takes you on a journey and invites you to discover the wine further and further. Certainly not a wine to be drunk over dinner in a large group alongside conversation, but one where wine lovers should debate and discuss with each other like explorers.
Not yet at its peak but already a great experience. I'm curious to see how it develops and look forward to tasting it again in a few years' time.
Absolutely a must in the wine cellar, especially as it is only a fraction of the price of a first growth but at least as much pleasure.
